MAY S.H.I.T. (Savage Henry Independent Times) We are happy to announce our July crafty fave! Our first literary crafty wonder - S.H.I.T, otherwise known as Savage Henry Independent Times. Our witty and sometimes nasty friends have released four issues of the most poignant bathroom reading material since the Jen Brangalina debacle. Really though, the staff of Savage Henry are a talented, creative bunch of folks that have found just the right combination of outlaws, artists, politicians, psychics, and juicy gossip to feed the hungry Humboldt masses. Look for Savage Henry in all of your favorite Humboldt hotspots, and check out www.savagehenrymagazine.com for info and more dirt.
Savage Henry Magazine was born last summer during a camping trip. Chris Durant, my editor at Northern Lights and I were shooting the breeze about living in Humboldt so long when he admitted that he was the editor of this scene-zine I totally loved when I was 19 called Shortbus. I had issues piled up on the back of my party house toilet on Baldwin Street. I talked it up and the idea was born for another one, but better. I had been playing with the idea of starting a little Roller Derby magazine, but this seemed more fun and locally viable. They were “downsizing” our publication at the Times Standard and that kind of propelled the idea into reality. Long story short, we added Chris’ wife Monica who is amazing on a computer and Josh Duke who everyone in town already knows, and put a dent in our credit cards, and Voila! We had a medium to say what we wanted to say but couldn’t before, and eventually make some money with it. We have amazing contributors and we let them say what they want too. Our artist, Sonny Wong has really helped the mag fly off the shelves. and our website was donated. It is pretty low budget. We do the best with what we have. Our press passes have duct tape on them and our pens all say Blue Lake Casino, but we treat it seriously. We have an extremely tiny little office for the pod cast and interviews, but mostly we work from home. Between the editors we have seven children. Home is good. It’s close to my dream job, at which I would be making a lot more money. At least I can speak my mind and get to live in Humboldt. That’s worth a lot. You can pick up a copy at Northtown Books in Arcata, or a million other places throughout the county. There is a list of places on the website.
